ConocoPhillips and partner Anadarko Petroleum are set to start work on developing more oil reserves in Alaska for production after receiving approval from federal officials to put together a collection of North Slope oil and gas leases into a new oilfield unit.
The leases are in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska, on the western side of Alaska's North Slope, according to a Reuters report. Approval for the new Bear Tooth Unit came last week, Greg Noble, acting branch chief for energy and mining for BLM's Alaska state office told Reuters. The unit agreement promises development drilling by 2012.
The Bear Tooth Unit comprises 23 leases and about 105,000 acres just northwest of the ConocoPhillips-operated Mooses Tooth Unit, according to ConocoPhillips.
While Mooses Tooth production is anticipated sometime between 2012 and 2014, full development of the Bear Tooth Unit will come later. Both units encompass sites of known oil discoveries. Mooses Tooth, however, is closer to existing oil field infrastructure. It could likely become the source of the first commercially produced oil from the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska and is expected to feed its oil into facilities at the ConocoPhillips-operated Alpine field located on state land just to the east. Approval for the Bear Tooth Unit came last week.
