Qatar's Ras Laffan Liquefied Natural Gas Company has confirmed the start-up of its first 7.8 million tonnes-per-annum liquefaction mega-train.
RasGas' Train 6 is the first of two such units destined for the RasGas 3 project that are scheduled to start operation this year.
The unit has come on stream just a few months after Qatar's first mega-train, which was built for the Qatargas 2 venture. The second train for RasGas 3 is due to start production late this year, according to project partner ExxonMobil.
With Qatargas 2's second 7.8 million-tpa giant also due on stream shortly, Qatar is cementing its position as the world's biggest LNG exporter. Its LNG production capacity is set to climb to more than 62 million tpa by the end of 2009.
“Ras Laffan 3 Train 6 represents yet another technological milestone that will help supply the growing global demand for clean-burning natural gas,”said ExxonMobil Development Company president Neil Duffin.
