ConocoPhillips and partner Anadarko Petroleum are set to start work on developing more oil reserves in Alaska for production after receiving approval from federal officials to put together a collection of North Slope oil and gas leases into a new oilfield unit.
The leases are in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska, on the western side of Alaska's North Slope, according to a Reuters report. Approval for the new Bear Tooth Unit came last week, Greg Noble, acting branch chief for energy and mining for BLM's Alaska state office told Reuters. UK supermajor BP has scored potentially the biggest find yet in the Lower Tertiary formation of the deep-water Gulf of Mexico.
BP refers to it as a “giant” discovery encouraging talk of a potential multiple billion-barrel accumulation. The well in Keathley Canyon Block 102 - drilled to a total depth of around 35,055 feet, a world record for vertical depth - found oil in multiple Lower Tertiary reservoirs. BP explained that appraisal work will be required to determine the size and commerciality of the find. Tiber is the second huge discovery for BP in the Lower Tertiary following the Kaskida find revealed in 2006. More...
